World of Warcraft : Raid Finder, Void Storage, New Content in 4.3

4.3 is shaping up to be a massive patch for World of Warcraft. We previously noted that the update will include a Transmogrification system, but there is quite a bit more in store for players in 4.3. Highlights include a new ‘Raid Finder’ feature, Void Storage; which allows players to store additional items, and a bevy of new content additions.

On the topic of Void Storage, Blizzard’s Tom Chilton explained to Kotaku that the feature (which allows players to store anywhere from 100-150 additional items) comes at a bit of a technical cost. Items stored in ‘Void Storage’ will lose their enchantments and gems, as well as the name of the person who crafted it. Guild Wars 2 employs a two- tiered reward system

Some PvPers will be content with doing just that – fighting other players scenario after scenario ad infinitum, while others will be in it for the rewards.  Guild Wars 2 employs a two- tiered reward system that most players will recognize: as you participate in sPvP scenarios, you gain “glory” – basically PvP XP – which is then represented by your “rank” – which you can think of as PvP levels.  You can then spend glory to purchase rewards, which are unlocked based on your rank.  These rewards include chests that contain random loot, like weapons, dyes, bags,glory buffs, tournament tickets, and other goodies, as well as tokens that you can use at the Mystic Forge to craft items.  It’s difficult to ascertain exactly how these rewards stack up to other high-level items earned from Guild Wars 2’s dungeons and crafting, but at the very least,they seem to be stable for the moment, unlike the game’s PvE rewards.

Of course, your sPvP rewards will be a bit more enticing if you choose to participate in Guild Wars 2’s organized tournaments, which were introduced post-launch.  Instead of just hotjoining scenarios to play along with a bunch of randos, you can put a team together and participate in 5v5 free and paid tournaments for heftier loot and bragging rights.  You can jump into 3-round, single-elimination, 8-team tournaments at any time, or, eventually, build up your reputation to qualify for monthly and yearly competitions.  Winning a free competition will net you glory, rank points, a tournament chest, and a tournament ticket – the last of which is required toenter paid tournaments (you can also purchase tickets from the in-game Black Lion Trading Company in packs of 5 and 30 for 75 and 360 gems, respectively).  Achieving first place in apaid tournament will reward you with glory, rank points, gems, qualifying points, and a tournament chest, although you’re sure to get at least one chest for participating, regardless of your team’s place in the competition.

In the August edition of the Fallen Earth State of the Game letter, producer Dave “Archangel” Haydysch begins by talking about the changes brought in the 1.6 patch. He then continues with a listing of the items that will be receiving attention in the patches set to roll out this fall.

Combat

We’ve been taking a very in-depth look at two core systems of Fallen Earth—Combat and Factions. Over the next several months we will be making changes as we continually adjust and improve these two systems.

Specifically for combat, we will be changing some of the formulas to create a more fast-paced, exciting combat experience. Major changes coming soon involve adjusting high levels of mitigation, tweaking the random damage spread and making armor require statistics (like Faction or Strength) and character level (rather than Armor Use skill). However, Armor Use skill will still determine how well armor performs. After these changes are in place, we will be making adjustments to Faction skills, Mutations and regular skills, and a balance pass for Items.The most competitive Price. To go through the new Runescape area

It might help that RuneScape is accessible through any browser. That instant access gives me the option to log in late at night from bed or from the breakfast area in the morning. I can open my laptop and I am in the game. It’s an entire world within a 15 inch screen. For some reason, that’s very appealing.

Even if exploring or gawking at candle-lit windows isn’t your thing, there is plenty of adventuring to do. Each major area has a series of tasks, essentially an achievement list, that you can concentrate your efforts on. I am still trying to finish the task list in the very first town I arrived in, Lumbridge. Some of the activities will require me to level a bit more, but I am slowing marking them all off my list. The funny thing is that I have never been someone who cares much about an achievement, but RuneScape pays players for doing these tasks with loot, experience and bits of cash. The task system is actually a great way to learn about the game and to gain some decent items when you first start out. Or, it was until Jagex, developers of the title, created a new newbie tutorial outside of the city of Burthorpe.

I jumped at the chance to go through the new area and loved every minute of it. It takes you through several activities that not only teach you the mechanics of the game but serve to suck you into the world of RuneScape; it charms you without your knowing. There is one section that has you playing the role of a sort of thief. In order to get an item you need, you have to create a horrendous pie and give it to a rather massive individual. He becomes so sick that the game actually warns you that the sounds you will hear might be disturbing. What follows is a series of belches, retches, and heaves that truly made me uneasy. It was all done without feeling cheesy or goofy, though. It was immersive, funny, and intense.

It feels like a deliberate delay to extend Diablo 3′s lifespan for casual gamers (who may not have got to 60 otherwise). It’s a lot like those fighting games that lock half the roster until you’ve finished Arcade mode dozens of times. Basically a cheap trick to keep you playing.

I’m not sure why this is a separate point. Maybe this should be 4a. ?

I’d agree with you though if the game wasn’t a 1-time price to buy the box. We earn nothing by ‘tricking’ you into playing more. Is it so crazy that we just want to make a fun game you’ll enjoy? Maybe it is these days.

6) Leveling is a huge focus of D3. This isn’t WoW. Inferno will be nice, but getting there is going to take a long time and for most characters will be the majority of their lifespan. Not being able to do this as the build I want is rather lame.

However, there are two simple solutions.

A)Allow players, every 10 levels, to unlock a single runeskill of their choice, in addition to the existing system. This means that there is still something to look forward too, those of us with very specific builds in mind can enjoy them pre-Inferno and the newer players/Zarhym’s Grandmother won’t be affected at all.

B) Like Crafting, once a runeskill has been unlocked it is available at level 6, or when the base skill unlocks on any new characters of that class.

A third really good suggestion, made by Inferno  Bound is giving some free rune choices as quest rewards. I am a big fan of this idea too. Thoughts?

Ok, so here it is, we do not have any problem with some kind of ‘rune point’ system where you could maybe earn points and then spend them wherever you want. But, and everyone loves this answer I know, it’s not going to make or break an already well-functional system and thus is not worth delaying the game to design and build out one where this is possible. Contrary to popular belief “when it’s done” is not the same as “let’s work on it for 7 more years until we’ve accomplished absolutely everything we can dream of”. Our commitment to quality and polish very much is the intent of our design mantras, though.

I realize some people are going to really want to be able to get that rune and MAN! it doesn’t unlock until level 58! And honestly that’s something we sympathize with to a degree, but the current system works very well, the current limitations absolutely have their benefits, it’s actually fun to be forced to try other effects, and immediately giving you what you want is usually not a fun game mechanic in the long term.

In my own personal opinion, it’s Diablo. If you can’t find a workable build without having your own perfect choices being handed to you on a silver platter at the start of the game, good luck in Inferno. Actually, good luck in Nightmare. This game is hard. 

From guilds you can also buy certain things

In guilds, you can also buy certain things, or just go there to buy common things of that skill. At times like Easter, Christmas and Halloween, there are kind of themes. I have never experienced these before, but I know you can get certain items and Runescape gold at these times by random events or killing monsters and they drop them. They can only be gotten at this time, therefore are rare and valuable after a while. I know people from years back playing that has things like Santa hats from Christmas years ago. These occur randomly, but normally when you are doing something like fishing or mining. They won’t just happen when you are walking along.

There are loads of these, and some are different on pay to play. Generally, they are all good in the way you get an easy reward. Some are quite hard however, and require skill. It is not bad a month and less if you pay for a year. You can pay by text, phone, credit card and more ways to suit you. 200 million is an obscenely big number. It’s more than the population ofBrazil; it’s the most XP you can gain in a skill; and it’s very nearly the number of accounts that have been created in RuneScape’s long and exciting history.

Here at the studio we’re really proud to be closing in on such an exciting number but, of course, we’d be nothing if it weren’t for you: our community. 200 million accounts means millions and millions of RuneScape stories, experiences and memories, and through the competition we’re launching today, we hope to hear as many of them as possible! After those two minutes, the invincibility will wear off and the other players in the arena will have 30 seconds to wreak vengeance and – best of all – to loot the supreme champions’ special weapons and make use of them before they disappear. Attacking the supreme champions will earn you extra points, and claiming the weapons will earn you an increased rate of trophy bones, which can be used to purchase some fun rewards from Marv at the Crucible’s entrance.

Structured PvP (sPvP) in Guild Wars 2 can be a freeing experience for the veteran MMO player. Compared to ArenaNet’s r/evolutionary vision for emergent and events-based gameplay in PvE and World-vs-World (WvW), the sPvP scenarios in Guild Wars 2 follow a more conventional design, which opens up a comfortable but still dynamic diversion for player-vs-player enthusiasts. On the one hand, ArenaNet has been lauded for its intention to shake up the traditional MMO mold as it relates to quest design and player participation in PvE areas.  Rather than approaching Guild Wars 2 with the tried, true, and tired formula of centralized quest hubs and kill X, fetch Y activities, the Bellevue-based studio opted for a gameplay design based on dynamic content, wherein adventuring and advancement depend more upon tiered locational events than static quest givers.  ArenaNet’s game also highly encourages open grouping, doing away with conventional mob tagging, and incentivizing player collaboration.

  

Star Wars: The Old Republic Column: SWTOR – The ‘Singleplayer RPG’

Many gamers have labeled Star Wars: The Old Republic a “singleplayer RPG”, but is this truly a fair criticism? What’s the larger issue here? We discuss it all in this week’s SWTOR column!

I’ve had the honor of stewarding this fine community here at MMORPG.com as your community manager for the last three years, and in that time I’ve seen all manner of comments posted on our forums. Working in community, you develop thick skin quickly and learn to resist jumping at the opportunity to respond to some of the more ridiculous statements you’ll inevitably encounter.

Unfortunately, one sort of comment has been nagging at me for going on two years now and I really can’t ignore it (or the subject) any longer. It goes something like this:

“Star Wars: The Old Republic is a singleplayer RPG.”

There are a ton of variations on this comment, but it’s pretty much used both in context when responding to threads about grouping or just as a catch-all criticism about the game whenever someone feels it’s deemed appropriate.

This statement is simply ridiculous, and I’ll explain more in a moment, but the most amusing part of all is that this was being thrown around even before Star Wars: The Old Republic was at all close to being released. You know, when no one really knew either way what the ratio of regular to group content would actually be? In fact, we even used to have a sticky thread dedicated entirely to this ‘discussion’ prior to the game’s launch.

If the issue does not happen without mods installed then it is not a WoW bug and you should contact the mod creator for further assistance.

How do I know that I’ve found a bug?: If you think you’ve found a bug at all, you should report it. In the worst case, you have actually found a bug, and in the best case, someone will point out that what your experiencing is intended functionality and will (hopefully) explain how to avoid the issue that you’re experiencing. Often, bugs will go unreported because people aren’t sure if it is “worth” reporting. The fact of the matter is that *every* bug is worth reporting. What just looks like a small graphic error may actually be a quest item underground or a hole in the map. You’re making the game better by reporting issues that you’ve noticed. As a side note, custom user interfaces can cause a variety of issues with the game, so please try to verify that the bug occurs without any custom UI mods loaded.

 Last weekend we were shown that this world in Guild Wars 2 will continue to expand over time, as new threats crawl out of the cracks.  Some threats in the world of Tyria are just animals found in the wild and small in size.  Others are mighty warrior centaurs and other opposing factions.  But the really exciting enemies are the big ones.  The giants and the dragons being the largest.  Well, one should get excited from fighting them anyways.

I spent a ton of my time playing video games.  Defeating goombas and slaying ninjas became an everyday activity.  But I lived for the boss fights!  It doesn’t matter what genre of game of you play, the big boss is always waiting around the corner  to put your skills to the ultimate tests.  With ArenaNet throwing dragons into Guild Wars 2, you will fight against one of the most powerful creatures in fantasy.  For me, the larger the enemy is, the more rewarding it is to bring them down. 

The first time I faced off against a dragon it was an exciting experience, but when I ventured off to slay the other dragons they didn’t seem so tough.  Here I was fighting a dragon that could alter the very ground I stood on just be flying above it.  Why was this dragon standing on the ground so much?  Why was I able to stay alive so easily during the fight?  I’m fighting a great beats called the Shatterer!  My character should /wetpants whenever the dragon looks in its general direction!
