Greetings everyone and welcome to this special 200th post of the Diablo Fan Art Watch, and this week we mark nearly 5 years ago when the watch was first started by Flux.

With that start the first artist to be visually featured was Vortexh. These days he’s known as Unidcolor from deviantART. I chatted with him over the weekend to mark this occasion.

Q: It has been five years since your art was first featured any thoughts about then?

Thanks for the feature! Its been five years already huh? Its weird how time goes so fast, but I’m glad to have played Diablo 2 and for that reason I found Diablo Incgamers, its a great community!

I’m thankful to have had some of my painting shared past years with the community and hopefully it has reminded people of their own great experience they had from Diablo 2.

We are team, the leading of Diablo 3 Power Leveling and Diablo 3 Gold provider.

Q: When did you first start making fan art?

Oh that’s a difficult question, the very first fan-art I can even remember drawing must have been when I was around 7 years, drawing Sonic, there is no obvious point when I truly started, and I have definitely been doing a lot of different kind of fan-art throughout the years, Pokemon, Naruto, WoW and a few more, but as for Diablo, 2008 was definitely the year I did my first fan-art for it, with hopefully more to come in the future as well.

Q: What is your favorite piece?

Its definitely the picture I made of Act 3 in Diablo 2 with the Thorned hulk, because I put in some extra effort on the figures and I felt like I managed to to capture the likeness and not totally screw up them and such ^^, usually I add a few figures early in a painting, but end up removing them because they don’t look right.

But as a close second it must be the Maggot Lair image just because of the lightning and the slightly more accurate environment to how it actually looks in game, I originally planned to have a Paladin entering the scene, but was later replace with a Death Beetle, much easier not to screw up.

Q: What do you use to make your art?

For software I use Photoshop cs5, the reason I really like Photoshop is because it is sort of easy to understand, yet have great versatility and complexity with all the tools if you so desire, brushes and colors behave in a way you think they would and it doesn’t get it the way of the painting process.

I have tried using other software like Painter, but I never liked how colors and brushes and the digital paper interacted with each other, I end up spending most of my time figuring out how the physics works rather than be painting, so Photoshop seems to the job good so I stick with that, I’m still learning new stuff about it every now and than, so I still got plenty to learn!

Together with that I use a tablet, Cte-640, its an old Wacom graphire4, its neither new, fancy nor big, but it works great, I did buy one of the newer Intuos tablets that was released, however with thinner and newer technology with more buttons things are bound to break fast, and sure it did :) .

Other than that, two monitors sure do help while working, since I can have any reference images on the second screen.

The protagonist travels to Bastion’s Keep with Tyrael, Leah and Adria to find it under attack by Azmodan’s army. After defeating the demon Ghom, the Lord of Gluttony, the protagonist travels to crater of Mount Arreat to confront Azmodan. Tyrael assists the protagonist in reaching the demonic gate protecting the crater, and destroys it with his sword. The protagonist traverses the depths of Arreat’s inner core to destroy the Sin Hearts, which empower Azmodan and his armies. Azmodan’s consort Cydaea, the Maiden of Lust, attempts to protect the hearts but is defeated. The protagonist confronts and defeats Azmodan, and Leah seals his soul in the black soulstone. With all seven lords of hell trapped within the stone, Tyrael states that the war will be ended if the stone is destroyed. The protagonist returns to Bastion’s Keep, but finds that Adria has betrayed them. Adria reveals she has been serving Diablo from the beginning, and that Leah’s father is Leoric’s son Aidan, the Dark Wanderer (the Warrior player character from the first game and Diablo’s reincarnate body in Diablo II), who was possessed by Diablo. Adria sacrifices Leah and uses the Black Soulstone to resurrect Diablo. Now in possession of all the souls of the Lords of Hell, Diablo becomes the Prime Evil, and begins an assault on the High Heavens.

Q: How was the Darkness Falls: Heroes Rise fan art contest for you?

It was exiting and great with so many good artists participating! I think would have been even more exited if the contest had allowed you to paint anything from the Diablo universe rather than the heroes from Diablo 3. I’m not very confident with painting figures or humans, and it probably showed in the picture I did as well :( .

It also felt slightly awkward painting fan art for a game that has not yet to be released, I’m used to be able to walk around in game and figure out where and what I like to paint, getting references and such, but besides that it was pretty cool!

Q: Any plans on your next work?

I got no plans right now, but this have made me feel like exploring the possibilities for what more cool stuff there is to paint from Diablo 2. I have some old fan art ideas (sketches) I made probably a year ago. If I recall right I attempted to do a picture of Act 1 with the five stones you activate to go to Tristram. Unfortunately the image wasn’t very exiting so I stopped working on it.

I also had some early attempt at a painting involving the Frozen river rescuing Anya, The Arcane Sanctuary, and a few more, but it can be hard to translate the Diablo 2D top view perspective into something viewed from the ground. I probably didn’t give myself enough time to really work out the images, but sometimes it just feels like a hopeless struggle.

But you will definitely see more fan art for Diablo in the future. I even have a picture from the outside of the Claw Viper Temple in Act 2 finished I did earlier this year, just waiting for it to be released before I can show it!

Q: Final comments?

Hopefully there will be more great things to come, also for Diablo 3 as well, I am looking forward to the next expansion to see how the game will evolve, but for right now I would like to stick with creating images that gives you the “blast from the past” feel.

Special thanks to Unid for the sketch art pieces. You can see all of Unidcolor’s artwork in our fan art gallery and his deviantART gallery. Also to mark this 200th post I have made a wallpaper with Unidcolor and his Demon Hunter fan art.
