With Forza Horizon 3 and Gears 4, Xbox Play Anywhere is on a shaky start

Ironically, given it what food was in the PC gaming business a long time before it had consoles, Microsoft has caught lots of flack lately for leaving PC gaming behind.

While the kind of Blizzard and Valve always put out excellent PC games every year, Microsoft’s support from the platform has felt just like an afterthought, with PC ports of console games which may have arrived late or otherwise at all.

Announced with this year’s E3, the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative was meant to change all of that. But the reality leaves something being desired right now.
Anywhere problems

For the uninitiated, the initiative is often a cross-buy scheme for Xbox and Windows that permits you to obtain a game once and are on both the Xbox One video gaming system and Windows PC platform.

Microsoft positioned the scheme as bringing parity for the two bits of hardware, which might receive simultaneous game releases and convey to an end the criticism that Microsoft has left the Windows platform to prioritise a hardware.

But to my opinion, the initiative, at the least on PC, hasn’t had a great start.

The Xbox One version of Forza Horizon 3, one with the initiative’s first games, may be well-received. Our own review referred to it as “a petrol-head’s dream” and elsewhere its arcade thrills and sumptuous visuals are already a hit with critics.

Meanwhile the launch of the PC version was plagued with performance conditions that make it really a struggle to relish.

I downloaded the experience on a machine pre-loaded with a 4th generation i7 processor along with a GTX 970 – a great setup that, although it is not at the “overkill” end of gaming PC specs remains more than respectable. Yet my system struggled to maintain a great 30 fps, and 60 fps (that’s more or less required for a fast-paced driving game similar to this) was nearly impossible.

To its credit, Microsoft is fitting in with rectify these performance problems with patches, but finding a working PC version on the game 3-4 months after its Xbox release isn’t what Xbox Play Anywhere, which was designed to mean equality between your two platforms, is dependant on.
Gears of Store

My problems would not end with Forza Horizon 3 Credits; problems with the Windows Store have prevented me from playing Gears of War 4 entirely.

In it, the devil’s within the patches. After getting through a monstrous 54GB download that took a whole weekend to squeeze down my puny 8Mb connection to the web, I was told I needed to download another patch.

At only a couple of megabytes, this patch should are already downloaded within minutes. But for unknown reasons the store would generate a mistake every time I tried to download hidden update.

The result was that I wasn’t capable of play 1 second of Gears of War 4.

It’s besides me – the state run Gears forums are plagued by people experiencing similar issues, with the Windows Store simply being struggle to patch their game, as well as their game refusing to start without a patch being installed.

If this example sounds much too familiar you then might be remembering Microsoft’s previous work for balance a PC gaming platform, Games for Windows Live, that has been roundly criticised for the time for leaving people not able to play games that they’d purchased.

I’m not gonna claim that the latest incarnation from the Windows Store is anywhere close to bad as GFW Live was, though the similarities are frustrating.

Instead of opting for just a well-developed and trusted store like Steam and even Origin (which after many years of attention from EA isn’t the mess it was formerly), Microsoft has chosen yet again to create a unique marketplace, and thus far it doesn’t look up to your task.

Xbox Play Anywhere, sometime?

Xbox Play Anywhere hasn’t had the top start in life. Two of the earliest games have received mishandled releases, one through PC performance issues and another through patching problems.

Both these stumbles are understandable. Quality control on the PC platform, featuring its numerous different hardware configurations, is quite a bit more difficult compared to consoles, and digital marketplaces are exceedingly complex components of infrastructure.

That either game has brought a release on PC whatsoever is a step inside right direction for Microsoft. This is the first Forza game show up on the PC, and past Gears of War games have hit the PC months, in any other case years, after their console releases.

But it’s clear that we’ve got a considerable ways to go prior to a two platforms are treated as complete equals.

EA offers free FUT packs with FIFA 15

This week marks the sixth anniversary of the FIFA Ultimate Team mode, and EA intends to celebrate the occasion by offering player packs. The game mode first appeared in the UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 game, but it was only officially implemented in the FIFA series with FIFA 09. Six years later, EA Sports decided to celebrate by offering packs and creating a special cup March 29.

Everyday, until that date, all players will receive a free pack of players per day (but it was not revealed what pack category it will be). EA is also creating a special FUT Birthday Cup, which may likely result in several rewards that have not been specified. Players can also purchase special packages, available every day until March 29.

This Week’s Most Amazing 14 Goals

Like us, you probably think you’re half decent at FIFA 15. If so, you need to watch this video and immediately bring yourself down a peg or two.

We had already been forced to reassess our abilities on everyone’s favourite game, after we went to the UK FIFA 15 Championships and were left very pretty silly and insignificant by the eight best FIFA players in Britain.

Now, we have got hold of this EA Sports video, which showcases the best goals scored on FIFA 15 in the last week.Suffice to say, we now understand what is actually possible in the game – and realise that we are yet to get anywhere near it.

If anyone reading this has ever scored a goal as good as the nine in this amazing video, we have two things to say to you:

1. Well done, congratulations and welcome to the official list of Row Zed heroes.

2. For the love of God, send it in to us (via the form below) so we can share it with the world…

FIFA 15 new features: Price Ranges

Once this feature has been activated, all FUT items (players, in-forms, consumables, and club items) in FIFA Ultimate Team will have a Price Range that sets the highest and lowest Fifa Coins prices that each item can be sold on the Transfer Market.

fifa 15

These new features are designed to:

  • Help FUT gamers understand the value of the players in their Club.
  • Make high-rated players more attainable for all FUT gamers and ensure a level playing field.
  • Further restrict illegitimate coin transfers on the Transfer Market.

Although the new FUT item Price Ranges will differ from current prices, their relative value to other player items on the Transfer Market will remain consistent in order to maintain a level playing field for everyone.

Here are some more important notes about Price Ranges:

  • All Price Ranges will be universal across Xbox, PlayStation and PC.
  • When you list an item on the Transfer Market, the range at which an item can be sold will appear. These price ranges will be set by the FIFA Team based on analysis of past Transfer Market prices.
  • Open bid transfers will be unavailable after Price Ranges have been activated. In order to list an item on the Transfer Market, you will have to set a “Buy It Now” price within the Price Range.
  • The Price Range for each FUT item will be set wide enough for you to still enjoy trading on the Transfer Market.
  • The Price Range for certain players may be adjusted in the future as we work to improve this feature over time.
  • New ‘in-form’ FUT player items will receive a Price Range upon release.

We believe the long-term benefits of this new change will make FUT more fun and fair for everyone.

fifa 15

We know that this is a significant change to FUT, and so we want your feedback. We are confident that, in the long run, the FUT community as a whole will come to appreciate the balanced benefits that this new feature will bring to all FUT players, but it’s important you let us know what you think.

In conjunction with these changes, the Transfer Market will remain inaccessible from the Web and Companion Apps.

Destiny Share New Exotic Necrochasm Isn’t Worth The Effort

The video review from Planet Destiny power leveling breaks down all of the pros and cons of the Necrochasm. On the positive side, it has the highest attack rating of the game with 339. In spite of its high rate-of-fire, it’s still accurate at medium range thanks in part of the Rangefinder upgrade. Reloads are quick and can be shortened every further with melee attacks thanks to the Cascade perk and the Flared Magwell upgrade. On top of all that, it’s the only assault rifle with arc damage and comes with many perks unlocked right at the outset.

However, the weapon has some serious downsides as well. Its low magazine size and low impact (damage per round) mean that you’ll need over a magazine to kill a tier 2 enemy. In PvP, you can only get two kills with a magazine if you’re extremely accurate.

The Necrochasm’s collection of perks kind of suck, too. One of its major selling points is supposed to be Cursebringer, which causes Cursed Thralls to blow up when you kill them with a precision shot. However, it’s hard to get precision kills due to the rate of fire. Even if you do, the explosion only happens around 75% of the time, seems to be delayed, and has a small damage radius.

The time investment required to get the gun is absurd, too. First, you need to get a Husk of the Pit auto rifle off a Blade of Crota on Earth or the Moon and then fully upgrade it. Then you have to change the weapon into the Legendary Eidolon Ally by purchasing an Embalming Orb from Eris Morn after you hit Reputation 3 with her. After that, you have to fully deck out your Eidolon Ally before you can even consider getting Necrochasm.

You’re still not done, though. You then have to get an item called Crux of Crota by finishing the Crota’s End raid on hard mode. Planet Destiny says you can only get this item by skipping hard mode and beating normal first. Furthermore, you need to own the Glowhoo Shader, another drop from Crota’s End hard mode. The Crux of Crota isn’t a guaranteed drop so you may need to beat Crota’s End hard mode multiple times to get it. That’s a hell of a grind to get an auto rifle that’s only decent at best.

“The perks on the Necrochasm just don’t feel exotic; it’s hardly better than an Eidolon Ally. Cascade will help in a few instances, Cursebringer will only help in pve, and the rest just don’t make the weapon powerful enough to warrant practical use,” the review concludes.

Odds are you won’t be using it all that long, either. Second expansion pack The House of Wolves is supposedly coming in March and will bring even more powerful guns. Necrochasm, like Vex Mythoclast, likely won’t get attack damage buffs to be competitive with these new additions. It’ll be a relic taking up space in your Vault. Granted, we might have plenty more Vault space soon but I think players expect more than a souvenir for all the hard work they’ve put into The Dark Below’s content.

Game-Breaking Heavy Ammo Bug Due For A Fix In February

Destiny‘s most frustrating bug is finally going to be fixed in February 2015. Going all the way back to the game’s launch, player have encountered an ongoing bug where reserve ammo mysteriously disappears. It happens after cutscenes, when you head to orbit, and every time you die. Bungie’s acknowledged the existence of the bug in the past, but the studio’s latest weekly update promises a fix in the near future.

While the bug affects all three types of ammo in the game, it’s most impactful with heavy weapons. Their purple ammo drops are a rare sight and, more than that, there’s a high cost attached to purchasing heavy ammo packs. Even when you use one of your precious packs — they’re frequently useful during Destiny power leveling dangerous raids — you always risk losing the ammo you get before you’ve even had a chance to fire off a shot.

While the problem seems simple, it’s actually very complicated, according to Bungie. Sandbox engineer Jon Cable is part of a team tasked with finding and squashing these bugs, and he offers some explanation of this issue’s complexity in Bungie’ post.

Skip ►muted
Cable starts out by explaining how the ammo disappears in the first place. The game’s inventory system creates a character’s weapons whenever they spawn or respawn, including the amount of ammo they had prior to death. The issue comes up when a piece of armor has a perk that boosts the total capacity of one ammo type or another.

It comes down to math. When the game calculates reserve ammo on a respawn, it does so before it factors in ammo boosts from armor perks. Destiny‘s inventory system uses fractions to calculate ammo totals, so when the pre-armor perk fraction is applied alongside the post-perk fraction, you end up with less ammo.

That explains why the bug happens — and it’s something both Bungie and players alike have known for some time — but Cable goes on to explain why it’s been so tricky to address. “This bug was mainly risky because it was at the intersection of a lot of different systems – player profiles, investment, sandbox, perks, and weapon management,” he said.

“There are a lot of weapon and armor perks in the game. Changing the order of how they are applied has a huge impact. It would have required a large restructuring of the way the game works to even accomplish this, because the armor perks can’t take effect until the weapon is created anyway. The application of armor perks would have to be inserted in between weapon creation and the rest of the weapon setup code.”

The chat with Cable concludes on a positive note. He’s formulated a fix, and one that doesn’t appear to break the game in other ways (which was a problem on the first few attempts). Now it’s just a matter of waiting for the patch to be written and deployed. According to Bungie, that will happen “before the end of February.”

According to reports, Bungie may be separating the Playstation and Xbox One Xur inventory. This would let PS4 gamers buy the Hawkmoon without Xbox One users being able to get it. It is also an early indication that the Hawkmoon may finally appear on the Xbox ahead of the PS4.

Bungie Has Acknowledged This Error Both On Twitter And On Its Website From Destiny

Destiny players on PlayStation and Xbox consoles began experiencing problems connecting to the game’s servers on Wednesday. Interestingly, the one common feature between all reports from players in the United States is that they are Comcast internet users.

Reports began coming in on Reddit and Twitter of players receiving the “Cattle” and “Banjo” errors when trying to connect to Destiny. Destiny power leveling will give you help.

Both the “Cattle” and “Bando” error descriptions state “If you are seeing this message, you are having trouble connecting to or maintaining a connection to Destiny matchmaking servers.”

There’s no immediate fix to either of these connection problems due to the fact that it is a network error and not something wrong with your router or modem.

“We are actively investigating issues impacting players’ ability to sign in to Destiny on all platforms. Until resolved, players may experience disconnects or be unable to sign in,” the message reads.

The one common factor in players not being able to connect is a Comcast internet subscription. The Destiny subreddit is full of one user after another stating their location and internet provider that are unable to connect. They are all Comcast subscribers in the United States.

Will Kurt Warner Be the Football Hall of Fame’s

Kurt Warner has made a career of overcoming adversity to reach a goal.

The Cedar Rapids native has been named one of 15 modern-day finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The selection committee meets Saturday, and nominees who receive a minimum 80 percent positive vote are headed to Canton, Ohio.

But what makes Warner’s first-ballot potential even more remarkable is this — no Iowa-born person, nor any Iowa high school graduates, have ever been among the 287 members who have been enshrined in the Hall.

Leave it to the state’s best known athletic underdog to be in the running.

“I’m amazed still that you tell me that no one from Iowa has made it yet,” Warner said, “but so much of my career is so unique, so different.”

Reaching the finalist stage is a challenge. Roger Craig, who starred at Davenport Central, made the cut to semifinalist (one of 26), but not the top 15 this round.

Although baseball’s Hall of Fame features legends such as Van Meter’s Bob Feller and Cascade’s Red Faber, the football equivalent has been awaiting an in-state pioneer.

Now, other Iowans can hope to share good news.

Warner, always the overachiever, would go on to be a National Honor Society student.
